One Local Summer

This year Steve and I are participating in One Local Summer where you eat at least one meal every week from June 1 to August 31 prepared entirely from local ingredients (save salt and pepper, oil and spices, unless you’re hardcore). Last year I was too scared to try, but this year I think we’re up for the challenge and have done some research into local farms. Besides, I live next to an ocean in a community surrounded by all sorts of farms. I can buy eggs from a neighbour. I truly have no legitimate excuse to not eat more locally grown foods seeing as eating locally doesn’t get any better than it does out here.
You should try it! Or at least start the ball rolling on the research to see where you can buy quality, local foods in your community.
This year we’re not participating in our community box program, much to my sadness, because we simply didn’t have the money to pay for the program upfront. Next year I vow to save the money before the spring so we can afford it. I will, however, be out at the farm every week to pick up my produce even if I don’t have a lovely and gorgeous box of fresh and unique vegetables waiting for me.
If you live in the Nanaimo area, you can find links and information about local farms and the 100 mile diet here
