I am a once-a-week launderess. This doing a bit of laundry every day? Never understood it. I have to make dinner every day. I have to do dishes everyday. I have to change bums, bath children, and ensure that they are fed and napped everyday. Why in the hell would I add laundry to the list? There’s enough to do everyday.
In fact when I read those well intentioned articles in magazines on getting organized and clutter control and they always suggest that you do a load of laundry every day, it pisses me off. I realize that reaction is completely irrational, but honestly, if you did what they suggest every bloody day there would be absolutely no down time. When do you knit? Or read? Or just sit and stare at the TV for a moment?
In the summer months, because of our water situation, I have to do laundry all week long and it makes me want to shot myself. Unfortunately our well can’t recover from the water load of a week’s worth of dirty clothes and diapers. Still, in the end I do WAY MORE laundry when I do a bit every day. I have a system, and my laundry is washed/dried/folded/putaway all in 24 hours. It used to all get done on Sunday afternoon but for reasons competely unknown to me this annoyed everyone, even people who don’t actually live here. Apparently Sunday’s are a “Family Day” although I don’t consider Steve napping on the couch while I watch the kids “Family Time” I did somehow start doing the laundry on Mondays instead… so now it takes 24 hours because I have “helpers”.
I have to admit that sorting the laundry is a good way to learn colors, even if it takes every ounce of my patience to let the kids “help”.
