Everyday::Laundry

The Laundry Train, on the move

Laundry is exciting!

I guess laundry is a lot more fun when you're a toddler

I am a once-a-week launderess.  This doing a bit of laundry every day?  Never understood it.  I have to make dinner every day.  I have to do dishes everyday.  I have to change bums, bath children, and ensure that they are fed and napped everyday.  Why in the hell would I add laundry to the list?  There’s enough to do everyday.

In fact when I read those well intentioned articles in magazines on getting organized and clutter control and they always suggest that you do a load of laundry every day, it pisses me off.  I realize that reaction is completely irrational, but honestly, if you did what they suggest every bloody day there would be absolutely no down time.  When do you knit?  Or read?  Or just sit and stare at the TV for a moment?

In the summer months, because of our water situation, I have to do laundry all week long and it makes me want to shot myself.   Unfortunately our well can’t recover from the water load of a week’s worth of dirty clothes and diapers.  Still, in the end I do WAY MORE laundry when I do a bit every day.  I have a system, and my laundry is washed/dried/folded/putaway all in 24 hours.  It used to all get done on Sunday afternoon but for reasons competely unknown to me this annoyed everyone, even people who don’t actually live here.  Apparently Sunday’s are a “Family Day” although I don’t consider Steve napping on the couch while I watch the kids “Family Time” I did somehow start doing the laundry on Mondays instead…  so now it takes 24 hours because I have “helpers”.

I have to admit that sorting the laundry is a good way to learn colors, even if it takes every ounce of my patience to let the kids “help”.

    I like getting all the laundry sorted, washed, dried, folded and put away as fast as possible too. Much easier that way.

    Do your kids get in the empty laundry basket and scoot it around like a train. We did as kids and your title totally brought it back in a rush!

    They do! Everything is a train. It is the preferred mode of travel in these parts!

    They were really hamming it up. All told it wasn’t a bad afternoon considering it was a preschool day and preschool days are starting to be my most dreaded days. He loves it, but I think deep down the kid is a true introvert and he completely crashes when he gets home. Or he’s just normal and will get used to it.

    I used to do most of it at night…for obvious reasons. I could fold and watch TV, and didn’t have to refold everything..after you and your sister threw it all back in the basket. It is more exciting when you are two!! Love the winking ;}

    My sis and I tend to do ours on Sunday too. So you’re in fabulous company! :)

    I swear Claire gets cuter every day!

    Gwen loves to help with the laundry too. In our case that means I pass her an item and she puts it in the washer (or the dryer, or the basket – wherever it needs to go). At the folding stage I give her several socks and see if she can find a pair (so far, NOPE). Then I fold all her clothes while she goofs around with the socks, and then she picks up the laundry basket and dumps all the folded laundry on the floor. Hooray!

    The socks is a good idea… gonna try that one!

    I am really easy going about a lot of things. You can paint over everything. You can get flour over everything. You can empty the cupboard and stack my tupperware of beans and knock them down. Don’t care, none of that bugs me.

    But dump over my freshly laundry? LOSE MY MIND. When people post videos of their kids emptying the laundry basket I’m like “NO! STOP! STOP!”.

    The kids, of course, find this hilarious.
