unintentional break

I know I just sort of dropped off the face of the blog-earth there.  Steve spent last week on the West Coast Trail doing bridge inspections, so I was on my own with the kidlets.  My hat is off to single parents.

I’ve also been mad busy.  MAD.  Meeting after meeting, on top of the whole about to have a baby any day now thing.  I’m worn out.  I have bouts of nesting, but mostly I’m just tired.  Everything is overwhelming and it seems like there is a million things to do.  This is typical for me in the last weeks of a pregnancy, judging by the archives, but it doesn’t get my kitchen floor clean or that trip to the grocery store taken of.

At any rate, tired or not I did manage to scratch off a few items on the old “To Do” list, including painting Callum’s room and begining the rearranging process for when Claire moves in there.    I’m taking suggestions on how to cram two single beds, two dressers, the toyboxes and some place to store books.   Bunk beds are out, the kids are too small, not that that has stopped me from considering the bunk bed route.  The reality is that everything isn’t going to fit in there but maybe you’ve seen some sort of cool storage device for small spaces I need to know about?!

The weather out in these parts has been spectacular, so we are trying to get outside to play, or to the beach for a make-shift picnic.  And we took a day-trip to Victoria to visit the Royal BC Museum and the Victoria Bug Museum.  The bug museum was amazing, mostly because our guide in that tiny little room was amazing.  The kids loved it, Callum said the cockroaches were his favorite part.  That kid even pet a tarantula!  Definite must do again although I’ve heard it is hit-or-miss and really boils down to getting a great guide.

Ramble, ramble.  Hopefully I’ll get my energy up this week and do some more regular posting.

I have no real suggestions for fitting two single beds in a rood. We took the boys closet out of thier room to fit the stuff in. I would try and leave one dresser in the babies room that the two can share or the baby has a small one.
I put the boys hanging clothes in N’s room and they share a dresser and a book shelf and a taller skinnier book shelf.
We have tried a couple of ways to fit it in and without taking out the closet(which was moving panels on a track) there was no way to do it.
When we get bunk beds; and that probably won’t be until they are 7; I am thinking of building a drywall closet and get rid of the track system all together.
I also have a rolling bin with drawers. The people who share a room get their names on a few of the drawers and it is the no touch drawers for their special things. Otherwise all the other toys are communal. Then you only need one toy box, Maybe. Good Luck with that.

    Thanks pogonip!

The closest is basically useless in that room, I’m not sure it would help to take the doors off… I’ll have to sit up there for a while and ponder.

I have all the ‘upstairs’ toys sorted (train set, megablocks, that other trian set and wooden blocks) into four boxes. Putting it all in one box just might kill me ;) . Initially I thought only one dresser, but then Steve thought two smaller ones… it might end up being one dresser. There is no way I’m getting a bookshelf in there, though. No idea how to rectify that one.

I also had big dreams that Claire’s dollhouse and the rocking horse would go in there. hahahaahahahahaha. At least I’m always optimistic.

Clearly my children have too much crap.

Hi I missed you! We just redid Jonah’s closet and instead of one tension rod we now have 3, four drawers, and a standup bookcase/toy case at the end. This has eliminated the use of his dresser altogether except that I still use it as his change table (which is the only place he doesn’t fight me). His closet was by no means big (standard size, I would imagine) Noel just bought closet organizer stuff from Home Depot and out it together. My kids also have a lot of clothes so there is no way they could share a closet but maybe the 2 girls can if you do it to both closets??? At any rate good luck!

I meant “put” instead of “out”

Sorry about the lack of energy. Your trip to the Bug Zoo sounds great! I love that place, can’t wait to take Gwen there … maybe this summer or next. I think Claire is a lot more mature than Gwen in many ways because she has her big brother to model older-kid behaviour for her.
Good luck getting everything to fit. Have you considered throwing out half of it? That would probably be my approach.
I’m still planning to make you some scalloped potatoes when #3 arrives, if there’s anything else you’d like just let me know! I’m much better with breads, muffins, and cookies than I am with vegetarian meals, so get your order in. And get some rest!

well, we DO love our muffins around these parts… ;)

I think the reality is that a lot of it IS going to have to just go. Wrapping my head around organizing that though – meh.

Sole – this closet is so weird. It has this weird angle in it, I’m not sure what sort of organizer would get in there. We did add another bar/shelf half-way down when Callum moved into the room. Thinking about it, though, I think we could add a little short dresser in there for clothes and maybe that could eliminate adding another dresser in the room. hmmmmm…..

I have an idea…..sell that house, move back 2 Calgary and buy a new house in my neiborhood with 4 bedrooms! Need any more advice? Just ask, I am always willing to help!

  10. Angela says:

I like Michelles suggestion. Even if you don’t move back, a bigger house may work better for you. I bet you can find a Realtor with reasonable rates.

Did I mention the herring and roe are here right now? There are currently thousands of birds on the beach. It’s very cool.

I’ve been harping on the bigger house angle, it’s not getting any love. Maybe someday we’ll add an extension or something. You know, when the money tree finally germinates in the back yard.

I haven’t posted since Valentine’s Day! I suck at blogging. I may do better next month though! Brian’s buying an upas for the living room. Sounds dirty, doesn’t it?! Heh. Just means I might post at night.

Re: storage solutions for small spaces. Probably stating the obvious here, but have you googled it? There are tons of things… beds with storage under them, corner bookcases, closet organizers instead of dressers, etc.

Alex has always said you fill a smaller house with memories faster or something like that….I think it’s just a sweet way to get out of buying a bigger house.

Amber, if you get a chance, check out this website http://knockoffwood.blogspot.com

She has great designs for kids’ furniture and storage pieces as well as for big people. You might find some really good ideas there. She’s inspired me to begin making my summer project list already!
